I don't quite know why, but this chapter was brilliant. It had so many funny moments (to me, anyway) and several moments where I was cheering on the 13 year old boy who once burned down a mansion without making sure to evacuate all the children from the building. Ahem.
Of course, chapter 71 continues on from where chapter 70 left off, with Soma arriving on an elephant. Ciel takes him to one side at the beginning of the chapter and tells him that since Soma is going into the Red Fox dormitory, which resident arsehole Maurice is in, he ought to be a little more covert. What does Soma do?
"HI, MAURICE! I NOTICED YOU'RE BEING REALLY MEAN TO CIEL. THAT'S NOT NICE. HE'S MY FRIEND AND I DON'T WANT YOU TO TREAT HIM LIKE THAT."
...Yeah.
Soma follows Maurice around a little more, continually pestering him into being Ciel's friend, and when Maurice is finally able to get Soma to go away, Soma crashes his elephant into the dorm and is forced to bunk with Maurice for a while. During his time here, Soma spies Maurice putting a load of flower-shaped cards into the post office, which he of course reports to Ciel.
These cards turn out to be... orders given to the vast array of students Maurice has at his command thanks to bullying/blackmail/other connections. So uh, that theory where people thought Maurice had a demon butler? In the form of the vice principal? Yeah, that just sailed out of the window.
Ciel confronts Maurice about all this and Maurice has a hissy fit, but then turns on Ciel and burns the evidence (which poor Sebastian had to scour the rubbish dump for and then painstakingly glue back together) and tries to beat him up and blackmail him with some incriminating photos. But of course, Ciel has arranged it so everybody hears about Maurice's deception, and he is removed from his position of servitude to the P4.
The other students congratulate Ciel, but the last page shows Sebastian looking equal parts bored and pissed off. Apparently he's going to 'fly south'? Interesting.
This chapter was also pretty funny in parts. From Soma obnoxiously announcing how good a friend Ciel was to Maurice just after he'd been told to spy on him, to his fear/heartbreak when he sees Sebastian at the school (since Ciel told him he could not bring Agni with him). However, Soma is kind of like duct tape in this chapter - a bit of a quick fix. The Maurice subplot wasn't really going anywhere, and so deus ex elephas, in comes Soma and his elephant and his quick comic relief. :/
Still, at least now that little twerp is out of the way, we can focus on the much darker plot going on at this school. I mean, now Ciel's rescued his reputation and all, there's no more obstacles in the way of his investigation. I just can't wait 'til we find out what's the deal with the Agares dude looking so much like Claude. Or why nobody is allowed to see the principal. Also, wasn't Ciel called here to investigate the disappearance of one of the Queen's relatives? Well, hopefully that's going to be taken care of. Soon. I hope. ![]()
I liked how Sebastian took an almost background role in this chapter. Of course, he's always behind the scenes doing most of Ciel's work, but it was nice to see Maurice taken down like that. I'm definitely intrigued by the idea of Sebastian going elsewhere next chapter, though...
